I have come to realize that I'm very unfamiliar with European cinema. We are to take digital copies of the AFI and Empire movie lists.
Analyse film
I analyse film by seeing what I think the director/writer/editor/cinematographer may or may not think is trying to visually communicate to the audience... a message, a character's emotion, an event, the location, a character's backstory, a character's traits and personality.

It tells about Doc's backstory. Losing his fortune and family mansion. Establishes the stolen plutonium, which is relevant for later on. The crate of plutonium connects the TV news report with Doc. Establishes that Doc and his dog have not been around for a long time because the dog bowl is overflowing and the coffee machine is spraying with no cup. The coffee machine also establishes Doc's untidiness.

 The can opener is a hint to Doc being an inventor.
The opening scene tells the audience what they are in for and setting up the two main characters. All of the countless number of clocks directly associate with 'time'. The smooth Steadicam angle hovers over to many things in the Doc's shed to establish the plot and characters. The radio advertisement establishes the location, which is a fictional US city called Hill Valley.

 Mis-en-scene tells us that there is an inventor that has made financial scarifies, and potentially ethical and life endangering choices to advance his goals. A young man likes skateboards, he is not a slob because he doesn't like the overflowing dog bowl, and it also establishes that he doesn't live there and haven't been there in a is a musician because he sets up an amplifier for his guitar.

 The sound is only significantly used when it showed the particular subject or object. Once the subject/object is not on-screen, the sound of the subject/object fades away because the filmmaking team behind this film is telling us it's no longer relevant.

It went from up-lifting and then goes to a sad place. The montage in the beginning of the movie successfully manages to tell a whole life story of a relationship in a couple of minutes with only visuals and music, but with no dialogue. I felt sad and sorry for both characters. Carl because after many decades of happiness with his wife, he is now alone and sad. Elle because her life has ended and after all they had been through. Nowadays, I feel some minor empathy, but also because I remember the emotions I had about the scene in the past and I have seen many sad movie scenes since, so I am bit de-sensitized.

It was something that was driving the plot along, but it was something I didn't think would happen. Stitch was a beloved character of the franchise and it made feel sad when I first watched the movie on TV. The sadness passed of course, because Stitch then miraculously came back to life. Nowadays, I feel much more empathy for all of the characters in the scenes than I did in the past, whereas in the past, the empathy of mine was all placed on Lilo and Stitch. This scene has shown even after 13 years since I first watched this movie, it's still pretty sad and in fact more sadder than from memory.

This was a sad, death scene I definitely didn't see coming. I found Yondu was a mediocre character in the original movie, yet here in the sequel they manage to develop the character to be more to be sympathetic to the audience. The screenwriters successfully managed to develop the character enough for his death to be sad. They developed Yondu into a good father figure for the main character, Star Lord. When I watched it in cinemas two years ago, I was really hoping that he would somehow survive or be bought back to life like many in the superhero film and comic book genre. My feelings have not changed since.

This was yet another scene I didn't see coming and like many Star Wars, which was the scene when Han Solo was killed Kylo Ren. If you spoiled the scene to me before seeing the movie in cinemas, I would not believe you and consider it as just another fan theory because there is lot of them on the Internet. The scene sadden me because Han was beloved character of the franchise and it was unpredictable. He still had a lot to teach to Rey, who was a skilled pilot and mechanic and was going to be part of his crew on the Millennium Falcon. I have nearly forgotten my feelings for this scene, but my empathy still remains with Rey, Chewbacca, Leia, and lot of the characters in the movie.

This is something I came across on YouTube; a montage of 90 years of cinema from last year's Oscars. 1 minute and 40 seconds into the video, it had a quote from Roger Ebert about cinema that intrigued me...

" The purpose of civilisation is to be able to empathise with other people. And for me, movies are like a machine that generates empathy. It lets you understand a little bit more about different hopes, aspirations, dreams, and fears. "

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts. The animation would need to be in sequences to limit the workload of the animator and I don't want it all animated because that's beyond me and letting animation students ...
