Audio Techniques - Week 1

We will be recording sound together, but mix sound on our own. We talked about the basics of sound types like foley, ADR, and score.

In The Winds Rises, I mainly just heard footsteps (foley) and score. The score doesn't make cultural sense (Italian music for a story in Japan), but it does makes sense for establishing a nostalgic theme.
There are also sounds of climbing on wood and metal (foley), pulling a lever, and a plane starting up.

A Field of England have sounds of stretching on a heavy rope, footsteps in an almost sweeping motion.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is clusters of sounds like footsteps, blaster shots, bodies falling, explosions, fire, spacecraft flying past above, lightsaber turning on, clashing with a sonic sword, and stabbing through a stormtrooper.

Inception have score, bass beats, bike riding past, car driving past, footsteps of people walking past, metallic sound design of the world rotating to the sky above.

 No Country for Old Men have bullet shells falling to the ground, opening and closing a truck door, horseshoes clamping on the ground, switching off a lamp, vomit, vomit impacting ground, and footsteps.

Non-diegetic and diegetic sound?
I wasn't feeling great today, so I missed out on some details that was being told in class. 
Non-diegetic and diegetic sound are terms that I'm not familiar and I have noted them down to find the definition later.

We are going doing some practical stuff in future classes and learn how to effectively use sound equipment. We will possibly have a music tutor talk to us as a class. We as class watched the opening scene of Baby Driver and pretty much agreed that the use of sound mixing and music in that film is a masterclass on effective use of sound mixing in film.

 We watched an edit of the short film that was filmed as part of the film boot camp at the beginning of this year. It wasn't until now that the film had a twist ending or even a plot twist.

 Diegetic sound
Diegetic sound is the type of sound ythat you see on screen and is not manipulated with in it creation like characters talking to see other (dialogue / ADR) or footsteps (foley). It can also be sounds or music coming from headphones, a phone, a car radio, or other digital technologies. Not all diegetic sounds are recorded on-set or on-location, they can be re-recorded in foley and ADR.

 Non-diegetic sound

Non-diegetic has types of sound that have no source on screen, the opposite of diegetic sound. Examples of non-diegetic sound are voice-over, music, and sound effects.

 When diegetic and non-diegetic combines or transition into the other, it is called trans-diegetic sound.

 Diagetic comes from a Greek term called diegesis, which means narration or narrative. In this case, diegetic sounds are sounds that are part of the narrative or narration, whereas non-diegetic are sounds not part of the narrative or narration.

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts.
