Visual Effects Compositing - Week 3
25/07/2019
It starts with the protagonist whistling and walking causally down an alleyway at night. He mutters about the most random stuff. He climbs in a open window. He has a flashlight in his mouth, humming as he enters
He opens the door and finds it
'The intel was right'.
IB: What is it that you most desire, mortal?
*talks about childhood and the things he misses*
IB: I can offer you to relive those moments you just enter
Inter-dimensional being is a master manipulator. Could be influenced from the nightmare from my childhoods involving being sucked into a TV.
Post-credits scene Oh god, where am I?
Deep, scary voice: Shut up

I should be fine with genre, target audience, and treatment and logline. But I'm uncertain what story theme my concept has. I may have to look at the example proposal to get some clarification
There are packs and assets in the Y drive for Premiere and After Effects with effects and animations that we are welcome to use
Could adjust the levels, curves, and colours of the effects available to us on Y drive. The spell hits could be good for surges surrounding the portal.
The protagonist just sits on the ground staring at the portal
We did a crash course on using After Effects and did a cool explosion on a person. I had a lot of fun by changing the colour of the explosion to a chemical type of blue, adding brightness/contrast and Hue/Saturation effects, in order to give a high contrast black and white that I like applying into my work. In addition to the Add Grain, to apply film grain to the black and white. This also serves a bit of practice towards what I have in mind for my Digital Filmmaking project.
Wide angles will be dominant in this paper's project
Glow could be a good effect to use when the protagonist enters the portal
I merely just add the glow effect to this video to indicate that something is coming and increasing the threshold as it gets closer. The threshold amount of the glow effect applied is somewhat subtle.
Genre: Sci-fi comedy
Target audience: 18-30, male and female
ProductionCrate. (2018, November 3). Blink portal tutorial in adobe after effects! [Video file]. Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3KNEhtLnm7U
This tutorial used a green screen behind the actors, so there would different coloured lights shinned on them and leaf blowers to look like the actors were encountering wind from the portal. They also rotoscoped the actors. The lights that are with the portal are achieved by playing through the scene with lights and then making them into still frames and masking the lights, which was then be all composited together on After Effects. The portal effect was purchased online.
This effect was influenced by the portals in the film, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Just like what I have in mind, this tutorial had the LED lights put in place of the portal and to simulate the light coming from the portal. When it comes to removing the LED lights on After Effects onscreen, you just have to make layer mask and sample the ground or such (as a still images).

Storyline
- It starts with the protagonist whistling and walking causally down an alleyway at night. He mutters about the most random stuff.
- He climbs in an open window. He has a flashlight in his mouth, humming as he enters
- He opens the door and finds the portal
- 'The intel was right'.
- He's pacing towards and away from the portal, debating whether to enter or not. He becomes a big baby about it.
- He worried about never returning back and if he's just going insane and if really he's having hallucinations (he did have Weet-Bix this morning that was one day past its best before date).
- He posts the video online and is not taken seriously. It's believed to be done on a computer.
- The protagonist just sits on the ground staring at the portal. Play with the flashlight
- He discovers a voice coming from the portal. Protagonist is weirded out.
- The voice dares him to enter. He does and he cautiously approaches. The protagonist enters the portal. A loud slurping noise. 'Mm. I forgot how humans from Dimension XA10 taste so good.'
- The portal is really a straw into an interdimensional being's mouth.
- The being is really just been playing with his food by talking to the character.

Characters
Portal
The voice coming from the portal is an interdimensional being. He is a master manipulator. Could be influenced from the nightmare from my childhood involving being sucked into a TV. I imagine this character having a booming voice. He likes to play with different species in other dimensions before consuming them, which can also be described as ‘playing with his food’. As far as he is concerned, the portal is pretty much the interdimensional being equivalent to drinking a soft drink with a straw at a McDonalds or KFC.
Alex
He is an internet blogger who comes across information about a portal being inside a building. Alex is curious to see what is there and decided to break into the building. He is not completely convinced that the portal is legit until he sees it for himself. He has a weird and sentimental. What he desires to do is to return to his childhood since life was simpler then, he missed doing stuff as a kid, he can’t do anymore and being a grown up has been depressing.
Sound
The portal would do a whirring sound that sounds like it’s going in circles
Slurping sound
Straw
Post-credits scene dialogue would have echo
Lighting
An LED on a C-stand towards the protagonist would be put in place and where will be the portal would be superimposed, and at the same time, be the bright light coming from the portal.
