Suzan Pitt is definitely an animator with an artistic style that mixes surrealism and aspects of pop art. Some techniques reminded me of Monty Python.

I couldn't help, but make a V for Vendetta reference. It took a while to realise the audience was clay animation figures, not live-action people. Her visual, surreal approach is like a drug trip.

It's something that just keeps itself moving and somehow forget about the composition and the subject becomes the composition. The medium looks like a painting like Loving Vincent. Her style is like as though if Salvador Dali focused more animation than visual art painting and such. It's so surreal, I didn't know what I had even watched.

She still somehow ultilises her same surreal style, but focuses on spilling out contemporary colours much more so than in her previous work. I found it quite hypnotic.

Themes - tyranny, persecution, fascism, identity, culture shock, depression, integrity

It started with a loose framerate and looked laggy because the projector was playing up, but it got fixed. It looked like a children's storybook come to life. It also The character being of vibrant colours and characters and the background being watercolours. Used black and white to tell the past. It also acts like a biopic, especially with the subjectivity and use of narration.

The protagonist being proud of her grandfather being a communist I would imagine wouldn't had gone down well with American mainstream audiences. The watercolours in black and white give elements of David Lynch and German Expressionism cinema in some compositions. It also reminds me of film grain in black and white films in early to mid twentieth century.

The sequence telling the father's political views was like it was satirical, and somewhere between a puppet show and Monty Python animation.

This film has showed that even a foreign language film can tug you at the heartstrings.

Overall, it is a beautiful film that act as an autobiography. 12 years since the film's release, it has aged well. It's pretty like An Angel at My Table, but this film is animated and set in Iran, not in live-action and set in New Zealand. I didn't think I would be interested this film, but I ended up enjoying it.

What the difference between the graphic novel and the film and does animation work to tell a memoir?

 The film leaves out scenes of Marji during her stay in Austria and her time there is much more limited in the film than it is in the graphic novel. The film also focuses more on the exposition; the Iranian revolution and the country's history. The film isn't as detailed about Marji's life as it is in the graphic novel. 

 The chapters in the film are condensed from the graphic novel, going from 19 chapters in the graphic novel to five chapters in the film. On another note, I believe the animation did well to deliver an autobiography in the form of a feature film, which allowed them to keep the spirit of the source material.

I managed to get the storyboards and shotlist done for my project. Experimenting with Tarantino's choice of camera angles, have long durations and has made it less stressful to organise with storyboards and shotlisting.

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts.
