Things to do to keep in mind after receiving research mapping feedback

  • Discuss more about my film project in my research mapping
  • Find more documentaries like mine
  • If have nothing to blog, write a film review
  • Keep approach to documentation and methodology brief
  • After writing my methodology, I should have in the second paragraph in the body of text about why I want to do a documentary on this subject as a way to explore aspect ratio
  • Include more about my project in each of my arguments e.g. a stronger connection to the examples. An example that applies a feeling of nostalgia - how would that help my documentary

Contemporary issue (climate change) - contemporary cinema (access to choose whatever aspect ratio you like) - that's why?

I watched the first two episodes of Wentworth on TVNZ Ondemand and was absolutely amazed by its quality of story, characters, writing, and performances. The show manages to successfully create an emotional response from a viewer like myself towards particular characters and their predicaments. Bea's abusive husband is written and performed so well and easy to hate that you can't wait until he gets his comeuppance and in my opinion, probably the most hated TV character since Joffery in Game of Thrones.

 Doreen,  a character you would never think get a three-dimensional character treatment gets one and the writers succeed in provoking empathy and sadness for the character, whether it's about her past or tough choices she has to make.
The show is written so strongly written that you cannot wait to watch the next episode and can make it an unpredictable and addictive show to watch to watch.
It can be so unpredictable that it sets up an antagonist that you expect will be on the show for quite a while, only to be killed off in the pilot episode.

 I cannot think of a show made in or made for this part of the world that is of premium quality or on the same level as imported shows like Chernobyl, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad etc. Outrageous Fortune comes close, but not enough. 
However, Wentworth manages to do so.
I kept wondering why can't a New Zealand television series be this good and addictive, it clearly shows that New Zealand television needs to up their game.

This fan made short film is amazing. Unlike most fan made films, it looks so polished and feels like a sneak peek for a real big-budget high-concept film and seems better than most video game film adaptions. It also promotes to fans and online viewers why Nathan Fillion is perfect for the role of Nathan Drake.

I like the part where it changes aspect ratio in one part from Cinemascope to 16:9. In this part, the handheld cinematography manages to effectively achieve the look of when you play the Uncharted games.

Release form email
I emailed Danny Stephens again (Hon James Shaw's comms guy) about the release form. 
I made some changes to the release form where Shaw would need to sign to limit him disclosing his personal information, so he just needs to include his email, phone number, and signature. 
I haven't heard back from him or Shaw in nearly two months and I thought that is good enough reason to email Stephens, but I also cc'd James Shaw this time.

 I got a reply from Danny this time and he asked for a copy of my footage. They have no isue with the release form.
Chat with Duncan
I had an amazing chat to Duncan about what the BSA731 paper requires of me and the progress of my project and what my film project is about. He was very interested and provided me with very useful advice. He suggested focusing my efforts now. The online climate strike is in another week, so I should try and orgainse and record as many Zoom interviews as possible before then. However, I should learn a bit about Zoom and how to use it, including doing a test recording of a Zoom meeting with a friend.


Ask your contact if there is anyone else to talk to that might be interested. I might contact every organiser in the country and come up with new questions, especially do with covid-19. Maybe interview them regularly like a video diary. At the start of every interview, always ask the subject if it's okay to record for my documentary

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts.
