Digital Video - Week 11

I doubled checked my synopsis and made some very minor changes to how it was written, but ultimately I was happy and didn't add anymore to the synopsis because I didn't say too much about what may happen in my documentary. I'm still satisfied with the current state of the final draft AV script, and so it is all ready to be submitted.

I went for a little look around Google Maps to do more potential B-roll and came across a road near Avenal that grabbed my attention. It seems perfect for my documentary it's an industrial part of Invercargill and is still left to be developed and is where rural and urban aesthetics collide.
The question will be whether the City Council will object to me filming on the street, filming the road like they were about Herbert Street. Filming B-roll won't have much health and safety concern post-covid-19 because it would be a skeleton crew. I would just someone to help me with the camera and someone to record sound.



I took another read at the documents informing the appropriate practice in working with children for filming. A lot of just constitutes scenarios and guidelines for child actors more than it would be for them being interview or involved in a documentary, plus one of the resources has been removed from the internet since I last read it, which was a individual performance agreement from 2013.
I should still be fine, but I'm still going to try and consult with my tutors and other students from my class for advice.

I reckon my filming in a traditional sense will be effectively short because the only outside filming I would need to do would be the B-roll and the main subject and the treat of covid-19 could be at a little to zero risk to health and safety. The rest would be stock footage and images, and footage and images from the climate strikes. 
However, health and safety will still be a priority in light of covid-19 and could be enforced if it gave a mutual peace of mind to the main subject and the film crew. 

Aspect ratio will make everything equally authentic in the documentary

I have also discovered that you are required to register with ScreenSafe to moderate covid-19-related health and safety for NZ film productions.

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts.
