BVA703 Research - S2 Week 16

I summitted my dissertation onto Blackboard today. I got the margin to 4cmon the left as Kathryn requested earlier in this month on Discord. I also tried to get the page numbers to start at the abstract, but I couldn't. 

I spent time making a lot of progress on my press kit and final cut. I redesigned my CV since I didn't the way it looked from doing it for my intern paper. 

I also went ahead with producing a 32-second teaser trailer for my documentary, which has come out quite good. I got in contacted with David Russell (photographer of the September 2019 school climate strike in Invercargill) to make sure he's fine with me using his images in the teaser trailer and the press kit and he is fine with it. He even told me that the last film production he was involved with was back in 1990, he was for a visual communication student film for Southland Polytechnic. Cartoonist Mark Winter was involved in that and the student film won in film festivals overseas as well.

I may contact David again on Monday to ask for hi-res copies of his images since he asked if he had done so previously. I will email him the images that I want from him on Monday.

I managed to purchase the music licensing from PremiumBeat for US$98 (just under NZ$150). It included with loops and shorter version of the music tracks and allows me to use in other projects as well in perpetuity. I went ahead and re-mixed the final cut with the licensed copies of the music tracks and found it was more louder than the previews that I had in the sound mix previously, so the licensed music tracks were mixed a little different as a result.

Spencer, J., & Ward, J. (Producers), & Baird, J. S. (Director). (2018). Stan & Ollie [Motion picture]. Entertainment One.




Stan and Ollie was a superb biopic with great production values and performances, and it was evident that the director made a great tribute out of this classic comedy duo, Laurel and Hardy. However, it lacked a potentially stronger screenplay. My favorite performance in this film was Steve Coogan as 'Stan'.

I managed to get the teaser trailer and poster ready and submitted to Think and Create


Laing, J. (Producer). (2020). Black Hands [Television series]. Television New Zealand



I watched the first episode of Black Hands last night, a five part mini-series co-production between TVNZ and Warner Bros. Television, I would describe it as a so-so melodrama with great technical highs (cinematography and music) and production values, which gives a Robert Sarkies look and feel to the show. The mini-series is based around the 1994 Bain family murders that happened in Dunedin in 1994 and depicts the family in the months leading up to the tragic event. 

The performances are at a no more higher standard than the average NZ drama depicting an historical event. I am definitely still going to continue watching this mini-series each week.

Black Hands intended to leave it to the viewers on who they think committed this historical New Zealand murders, based on this series' acting performances. Was it a young, lonely, university student, David Bain or his father, a schoolteacher estranged from his religiously devout wife.

I contacted David Russell about acquiring hi-res version of the images that I had been using for my short documentary. I am, to meet with me in person about which ones, potentially on Thursday since his schedule is always subject to change.

I sent out courtesy emails to the location providers and Robert Guyton (one of the interview subjects), which included a link to the teaser trailer published by Think and Create. I received replies on the same day from Nathan Gill (Invercargill City Council) and Mandy Smith (Miharo). Mandy appreciate me including Miharo into this project and complimented me on the teaser trailer and the subject of my documentary.

I met up David Russell at his place and selected the images he had of the local school climate strike back in September las year. There some images he didn't have and some I missed when selecting them, but I managed to some compromises when replacing the images I had of his from the internet with the hi-res images. I also selected some new images from his collection, which were good replacements for the images that I had missed. I could had asked to see him again, but I didn't want to push my luck.

I also added the hi-res images into my teaser trailer.

I did some more work on my press kit by adding the Cabin Sketch font and I started collecting up all my paperwork into a document for my submissions.


Script supervisor research

I did research on the role of a script supervisor in preparation for a film shoot coming up very soon for a local short film production

Keep note of continuity in each take and scene e.g. position of props, constant clothing

Take photos of each frame at the beginning and ending of each scene. This is good for each department on what prop or actor were originally positioned at as they change and move between takes

Changes in dialogue or direction, which the script supervisor makes note of

Continuity examples - no changes in posters, toys positioned the same as the previous angles, actor's eyelines match each angle (inconsistent eyeline can throw off the scene's emotions), time in the background

22/06/2020 'Buffering' Exhibition We forgot about having the exhibition map done and sent to Kathryn last Friday. We will keep that in mind for our next exhibition. I reminded the groups, especially the design team about the sandwich boards at the RAW Gallery that could be used to promote the exhibition There was confusion over submitting prints to be printed for our exhibition. I wasn't sure where to send it to for printing, to Rachel (like the L7 animation students) or James. I did however send the TIFFs of my prints to James just in case. Rachel informed us about placing our prints on foam core, it's a type of foam board that also sticks to the wall. There is a catch though, we have to cut them and stick our print(s) to the foam core ourselves. I gotta say that a print looks better on foam core than on its own. Rachel also warned us to have confidence while cutting the foam core or otherwise the edge will look uneven and rough. This will be quite challenging ...

Digital Video - Lockdown Week 4

15/04/2020 I heard back from James and gave his advice on my concerns, which is that I look for images and footage of the climate strike by school student and use that as B-roll.  B-roll is not always meant to be of a good quality. I may research into potential ethical considerations on consent for using other people's work.  James reckons I will be fine with going ahead with this as long as I focus on what the subject is about and interviews with key players. I could use their work and have interviews in voice-over, however I will consult with the course outline to double check what is required of me to do for my film project. He also reckons my main concern is not being able to film climate strikes, which was only part of the problem. However, the B-roll could still convey drama and urgency depending on its content. BVA703 Research - Lockdown Week 3

10/04/2020 At midnight brushing my teeth, I suddenly came up with options to capture amongst the crowd stuff to convey urgency of my subject, what if it could achieved with green screen or animation.  Green screen would be a big undertaking and would require each person being filmed individually with a long lens, which would be potentially too consuming on time and resources. A long lens would be necessary to feed into post-COVID-19 health and safety. Animation would require at least one animator depending on the time needed to animate sequences needed. The sequence would ideally be in a sketchy style similar to  Stay Close  or  Dear Basketball .  I would need to think carefully about this since it would need to not disrupt the style and tone of the live-action parts.
